Finding the right service for you

Although play therapy is my passion, I acknowledge that isn’t for everyone. There are other modalities that I draw from in my work with children, adolescents, and caregivers. My priority is to tailor counselling to suit individual needs.

Child Centered Play Therapy

Play Therapy (based in neuroscience) builds on the natural way that children learn about themselves, their relationships, and the world around them. The child/ play therapist relationship can offer a space where the child can safely express, explore and make sense of their difficult life experiences. Through this approach, children can start to heal and grow through self-discovery.

Children can also use play as a way to communicate. Often children don’t have the words to describe their thoughts, feelings, and perceptions. (Gil, 1991) Play Therapy allows the therapist to communicate with the child in their preferred mode, rather than expecting the child to communicate in the adults preferred mode of words. In Play Therapy toys are like the children’s words and play is the child’s language. (Landreth, 2002).

Father and Son Playing

Filial Therapy

The parent/carer knows their child better than anyone. This way of working differs from conventional play as the parent/carer is fully involved, acknowledging how important a parent/carer is to a child. This relationship plays a big role in a child’s healing, growth and development. Filial Therapy under the instruction of a Child Centered Play Therapist uses this powerful relationship to work through the issues for the child and family.  Research has shown that a parent/ carer can be as or even more effective than a play therapist in helping their child through problems and issues.
